Medical center launches free program to lower risk of diabetes

The percentage of overweight individuals in America continues to rise with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting the current rate at more than 73 percent. There are now over 49 percent of adults age 20 and over who are classified as obese.

There are many inherent health risks associated with these statistics, adding up to over $170 billion in healthcare costs annually. These risks include heart disease, stroke, certain forms of cancer and diabetes.

One in three U.S. residents has prediabetes, and because of these staggering numbers, Greene County Medical Center’s care management team urges you to ask yourself a serious question—do I have prediabetes?

If you have received a diagnosis of prediabetes from your healthcare provider or you were found to be at high risk through a self-guided assessment at https://doihaveprediabetes.org, you may qualify to take advantage of a free program designed to help lower your risk of developing diabetes.

Greene County Medical Center will launch the online National Diabetes Prevention Program in January of 2023. This free, year-long course consists of 26 video lessons over 12 months and also includes regular virtual interaction with your personal lifestyle coach and support from the online community. Participants can watch the videos at their convenience in a schedule that begins with weekly lessons for the first four months then tapers off to a monthly schedule.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program is designed to help you make sustainable, healthy lifestyle changes and reach attainable goals for weight loss, healthier eating, increased activity, reduced stress, and most importantly, prevention of diabetes.

For more information or to register for the program, email diabetes-prevention@gcmchealth.com or call 515-386-0469.
